Paddington, Sydney living: the highlights

The sought-after suburb of Paddington, nicknamed “Paddo”, is located a mere 3km from the Sydney CBD, making it ultra-central without the overwhelming bustle of inner-city living – a good thing, as there’s already plenty to do here.

Bursting with commercial activity thanks to its many popular shopping and dining precincts, it’s a hit with locals and visitors alike. No trip to Paddington is complete without a visit to the Oxford Street clothing boutiques, and with the eclectic designers of William Street and the Paddington Markets a mere stroll away residents are always decked out in cutting-edge attire – and their designer pooches are as well.

In addition to shopping, Paddington offers endless cultural attractions. A key hub is the Paddington Town Hall, an historic building that has been retrofitted with a cinema, a library, and the local radio studios; other eye-catching historic buildings include the Victoria Barracks and the magnificent Juniper Hall. Between the art-house cinemas, private art galleries, bars and clubs and endless culinary options, culture lovers will have plenty to keep themselves occupied, but sports lovers won’t miss out either. Sports fans will rejoice at their proximity to the SCG, Allianz Stadium, and prominent tennis and cricket offerings.

Paddington’s attractions

Oxford Street is a key player in Sydney’s annual Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, which take place in march every year, and see the length of the street transformed with floats and parade goers.

With its art-house cinema offerings, Paddington is often a key player in foreign film festivals, including the annual Alliance Française French Film Festival or the much-awaited programmes of the Chauvel Cinematheque.

The weekly Paddington Markets are a must-see for visitors and locals alike. They’re a great way to support local designers and pick up a one-of-a-kind piece you won’t find anywhere else. Themed events such as the annual Fair Trade weekend can often be found on offer at the markets.

Nearby Centennial Park, at the end of Oxford Street, is a frequent host for outdoor activities, including music, sports, charity events and open-air cinema events.

Proximity to transport and infrastructure

Paddington’s central location and reputation as a tourism hub ensures that its transport and infrastructure offerings are top-notch. In addition to the nearby Edgecliff railway station, six different bus lines run through the area, taking passengers along Oxford Street and through Five Ways. Destinations include the CBD, Bondi Beach and Bondi Junction. Though no longer functioning, you can still see the historic tram routes that ran through Oxford Street and Five Ways for close to a hundred years.

Families with children will have a plethora of highly ranked primary and secondary schools at their fingertips – private and public schools are both well represented, with Sydney Grammar School’s preparatory campus at the top of the list for many parents of young kids.

Larger shopping centres are a quick drive away, but locals will be able to avail themselves of upmarket grocery offerings such as Thomas Dux and local organic fare.
