Escape into your own private oasis | Real Estate Blog – Niche Portfolio

Wednesday, April 30, 2014

With all the chaos of our modern world, we all need a private haven to escape to. Nature has provided us with one of the most decadent luxuries the human mind could ever imagine: the sun. The Beatles said it best: “Here come the sun, little darling, smiles returning to their faces.” The sun holds an unparalleled healing and energizing power.

After a long day meeting deadlines and others’ expectations, there is nothing I love more than to slip into the chaise lounge in my own private oasis. Curating this space has become a hobby of mine and I feel it’s a gift I have to share with the world. Everyone needs a private refuge to recover from the stress of their day and gain power for the next.

When I first started fantasizing about my outdoor lounge the image of the shoreline baking under the hot sun remained in my mind. I wanted to create an illusion of sipping from a coconut while letting the stresses of the outer world melt away.  My husband and I started by excavating a broken-down, unused porch and preparing the earth below for a new structure. We worked with a contractor to build a treehouse that was approximately six metres by six metres, enough space for a lounge, a hammock, comfortable chairs, a small table, potted plants and a telescope (my husband’s favorite toy!) The angle of the treehouse was especially designed to allow sun in from all angles – both us and our plants benefits from this simple but smart design.

Our intention was to use this space not only for relaxing but also to host intimate gatherings. We had a vision of bringing indoor living outside, and really, there are no limits! The possibilities are endless: cuddling with my sweetie while listening to classic tunes, to enjoying a novel on a Sunday afternoon, or hosting dear friends for a cozy gathering of tapas, wine, and shared stories.  Friends and family have been amazed by this novelty space which has now become such a standard part of our weekly routine.

Rather than remodeling the interior of our house to gain the space we sought, we’ve found our outdoor extension to be a cheap, easy way to gain a versatile, attractive space.  Whether you seek more office space, a guest room, a kids’ wonderland, or an indoor/outdoor eating area, building a treehouse can be an innovative, modern, and fun solution.

Don’t just dream – use the following steps to make your secret fantasies a reality:

  1. Determine the main needs you’d like to fulfill with the new space.
  2. Decide if you can work with existing space or if you have a need for a contractor.
  3. Create a wish list of items for the space and determine your budget.
  4. Watch your budget by going second hand and finding novelty items in flea markets.
  5. Waste not, want not! Consider sustainability when buying new items. Sustainable materials like bamboo are very fashionable!
  6. Don’t delay – Execute!

Our outdoor paradise has revitalized our property and added financial value. My hubby and I have enjoyed many priceless moments in this space and our house has become a hotspot for community gatherings. A simple space, good décor, excellent company and memorable moments – Little Darling, I’d say the Sun has arrived!
